Water main upgrade

The water main, built in 1960, has reached the end of its useful life and has experienced several breaks in recent years. To ensure reliable water supply and reduce the risk of future disruptions, Tweed Shire Council are upgrading the water main in accordance with their Asset Management Plan. This work is essential to deliver the required levels of service to the community and to maintain a safe and sustainable water supply infrastructure

Location

Minjungbal Drive, from Kirkwood Road to Tweed City Shopping Centre, Tweed Heads South

Schedule of works

To minimise disruptions, works will take approximately 5 weeks and are scheduled between 28 October to 1 December 2024, after the NSW school holidays, weather permitting.

Work hours

Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm.

Works may need to be conducted some Saturdays, between 7am and 1pm. Trenching across the Tweed City Shopping Centre entrance, opposite Blundell Boulevard, will be done midway through the works, at night between 6pm and 6am.

Connections between the new and old water mains will also be done at night towards the end of the project. Line marking will be completed at night at the end of the project.

Alternative routes

Use alternative routes where possible to avoid the work zone or allow additional time for your journey.

What to expect
  • There will be temporary lane closures along Minjungbal Drive and Kirkwood Road during work hours, which may cause delays of up to 10 minutes.
  • One westbound lane on Kirkwood Road, at the approach to Minjungbal Drive intersection, will be closed while workers install the main along that section of the roadway.
  • The southbound left-turn lane into Tweed City at Blundell Boulevard will be closed while crews install the main along that section of the roadway. Please use the alternate entrances at Kirkwood Road or Machinery Drive during this time.
  • The Blundell Boulevard entrance to Tweed City will be closed midway through the project for about 4 nights, from Monday to Thursday. The work will involve trenching across the middle of the entrance. Please use the Kirkwood Road or Machinery Drive entrances during this time. The entrance will be open during the day. Follow safety signs and message boards for guidance. There is a chance these works may be completed in 3 nights, avoiding Thursday late-night shopping.
  • Short interruptions to the water supply will be required. This will be scheduled at night.
  • There will be limited access to some properties and driveways within the work zone during
work hours. Please ask the traffic controller for help if you need access.
  • There will be no pedestrian access through the worksite, on the eastern footpath along
Minjungbal Drive, for the duration of the works. Pedestrians will be directed to use the
footpath on the western side of the road.
  • There will be changed traffic conditions with traffic controllers guiding traffic flow during work hours.
  • There will be large earthmoving machinery.
  • Some construction noise and dust.
  • Minor ground vibrations.
  • Line marking will take place at night towards the end of the project.
